What are foil/foiled wedding invitations?

Foiling is a way of adding some shine to your wedding invitations and across your stationery suite. There are two main types of foiling you’ll see across wedding stationery designs. The first is Hot Foil and the second Digital Foil. Both can be mixed with standard digital printing.

What type of foiling is right for me?

Hot Foiling - Hot Foil is a traditional method of adding foil to your stationery. It’s done by creating your design on what’s called a ‘plate’. Once this ‘plate’ has been created from your design it is stamped onto each pice of paper - attaching the foil. Each piece of paper must be fed through individually to have the foil attached. When the ‘plate’ is pressed into the paper with the machine/press it leave an indentation in the paper. This impression is a beautiful part of the process. This process also allows you to have your choice of paper - smooth or textured. It is up to you! This is the most luxurious form of foiling and has more freedom in its process.

Digital Foiling - Digital Foiling is a more modern method and a cheaper method/price point for you. The foil is attached by heating it to the ink design below. The foil attaches to the ink and leave a foil effect that is very different to Hot Foil. It is a more shiny foil look. Due to the process you have less choice of papers. You will only be able to have smoother papers as the foil needs a smooth surface to stick to. Digital Foil can have some black spots where the foil hasn’t taken. Mostly minimal but please be aware of this when ordering cheaper versions from Etsy. A lot of times a cheaper home machine is used and the black areas will be a lot more than you bargained for.

Where can I use it?

You can use hot foil across your wedding stationery suite. Hot foil Save the Dates, hot foil Invitations and hot foil Menus. Now Place cards… they are the tricky one! Digital foil place cards are perfectly possible however Hot Foil… not really! Hot Foil is created with a ‘plate’ as previously mentioned so each place card would need a different plate - it’s possible but you’ll probably have to be a millionaire to afford it.
